Lovers’ quarrel unfolding for the 118th time this year, is the biggest sporting event down-south.
Lovers’ Quarrel began in 1905, under the two principals Rev. James Horne Darrel of Richmond College and Sir. Frank Lee Woodward of Mahinda College, who also officiated the inaugural match. Richmond College recorded the first-ever Lovers’ Quarrel victory in the same year and had both 1906 and 1907 years under their belt. Mahinda College recorded their first victory in 1908 and their last in 2008.
So far Richmond College owns 24 wins and Mahinda College owns 23 wins while 65 matches were drawn.
Among the most outstanding figures, Mahindians’ 10 wickets victory over Richmondites in 2008 encounter stands out. Ending a 45-year long wait, Richmond recorded a famous one-inning victory in the 2014 encounter and continued their dominant performance by recording the 2nd consecutive one-inning victory in 2015.
The year 2023 marks a special encounter as Mahindians bring a complete package to the table, challenging the defending champions as the stage is set for a heated battle between the two sides.
